Bruijn's Brush-turkey

An Indonesian endemic, Bruijn's Brush-turkey occurs in mountain forests on Waigeo Island of West Papua.

The Bruijn's Brush-turkey is classified as Endangered (EN), considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild.

An Indonesian endemic, Bruijn's Brush-turkey occurs in mountain forests on Waigeo Island of West Papua. Previously known from less than twenty-five specimens, this little-known species was relocated in 2002. The name commemorates the Dutch merchant Anton August Bruijn. This bird is threatened by hunting, ongoing habitat loss, small population size and a limited range. It was formerly classified as a Vulnerable species by the IUCN. But new research has shown it to be rarer than it was believed. More

Bruijn's Brush-Turkey Aepypodius bruijnii on Waigeo, Papua, Indonesia = by Iwein Mauro - June 6, 2002 An opportunistic survey of Mount Nok - located on the far eastern side of Waigeo's Majalibit Bay - undertaken this May month by Iwein Mauro, resulted in the first observations in the wild of the virtually unknown Bruijn's Brush-turkey. suggests that Bruijn's Brush-turkey occurs at low density, probably with specialised habitat requirements within higher altitude forests, and that it is extremely sensitive to human disturbance. It is certainly elusive; at least 15 expeditions have earlier searched for it without success, and at one time it was even doubted if Waigeo really could be its home territory. Fortunately, the bird's preferred steep, high-altitude forest habitat is not conducive to logging or farming and is rarely visited by local people. More

Rediscovery of Bruijn's Brush-turkey on Waigeo Island, Sorong, Irian-Jaya, Indonesia On March 1999, the Waigeo Expedition 1999 was organised, first, to carry out an intensive search to rediscover the 'long lost' Aepypodius bruijnii, and, second, to do a bird inventory in general. It was followed by the second Waigeo Expedition in 2000. Almost all Waigeo villages were surveyed and several treks into the nearly inaccessible, rugged and densely forested interior of the island (total surface about 3,200 sq. More

These remains were carefully studied and compared to other Megapodes, using photos, measurements and illustrations from literature by Heij, Post and Tindige. Heij and Post, the Dutch members of the Waigeo Expeditions, studied in 1999 the mounted specimens of Bruijn's brush-turkey and other closely related Megapode-species in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History (New York) and Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (Java-Indonesia). The Bruijn's brush-turkey was caught in the heavily forested interior of the tiny island of Waigeo, off north-west New Guinea, as the men hunted wild pigs. But after they had dined, another man recognised the remains and told the villagers the bird was "wanted". The men injected the discarded head with formaldehyde normally used to preserve Birds of Paradise and kept the bones to give to the World Pheasant Association (WPA). More
