Red-bearded Bee-eater

Like other bee-eaters, they are colourful birds with long tails, long decurved beaks and pointed wings. They are large bee-eaters, predominantly green, with a red colouration to face that extends on to the slightly hanging throat feathers to form the “beard”.

Ashley Ng shared an image of a male Red-bearded Bee-Eater (Nyctyornis amictus) with a cicada in its bill trying to attract a potential mate. Bee-eaters do indulge in courtship feeding and this may be a rare image of the ritual. This species does not occur in Singapore but can be seen in Peninsula Malaysia. As with bee-eaters, it hunts from a high perch keeping close watch on the airspace around. Once an insect is seen, it dashes off to capture it. More

Johor, Malaysia to document a pair of Red-bearded Bee-eater (Nyctyornis amictus) feeding their chicks. “…a larger species of bee-eaters. I would never dream of photographing this species as they are rather elusive, feeding mainly on insects and bees that are caught in flight from perches concealed in foliage. They were found in lower part of the forest as they were nesting. They constantly returned with food to feed their nestling(s)… including food that is not in their normal diet (like lizards) (left). Red-bearded Bee-eater (right) that I photographed near its nest burrow in western Sumatra. All bee-eaters dig such burrows for nesting sites. Nearly all the family is assigned to the genus Merops but the Red-bearded Bee-eater of Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra & Borneo is in the genus Nyctornis (as is the more northern Blue-bearded Bee-eater N. athertoni in SE Asia; the purple-headed Celebes Bee-eater Meropogon forsteni is the other non-Merops oddity).
