The Brown-hooded kingfisher is common in the eastern half of southern Africa, mainly living in woodland habitats, as well as heavily wooded gardens and parks. It has a broad and varied diet, eating a wide variety of animals, rarely eating fish. Both sexes excavate the nest, which is a burrow, normally dug into the walls of gullies. It lays 2-5, rarely 6 eggs, which are incubated solely by the female, for about 14 days. Very little is known about the young. More

The photos were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II & EF 500mm F/4L IS lens and a 1.4X extender. The bird is a little ratty looking because it is moulting at this time of year. More
The Brown-hooded kingfisher is usually found amongst thicker woodland, along streambeds and in coastal bush. It also occurs in gardens and parks. It is usually seen singly or in pairs, and spends much of the time perched at the edge of an overhanging tree, or amongst the lower branches, from whence is can drop to the ground to catch it's insect prey. It will also take lizards, crabs, small rodents, snakes and small birds. More
