The Zigzag Heron is a species of heron in the Ardeidae family, also including egrets and bitterns. It is in the monotypic genus Zebrilus. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical swamps. The Zigzag Heron is a species of the entire Amazon Basin, east of the Andes cordillera, and the five bordering countries on the basin's western periphery, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. The range does not extend beyond the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela in the northwest, and in the east-northeast encompasses the Guianas; in the southeast Amazon Basin the range does not extend east of the Tapajós River drainage.
The Zigzag Heron is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.
(including the enigmatic Zigzag Heron Zebrilus undulatus of South America). While tiger-herons and bitterns are secretive and difficult to observer, day-herons & egrets around the world are easy to watch. Frequently, marshland scenes are full of herons and egrets. Often they nest is large noisy colonies. The sheer abundance and variety of herons in swampy lowlands can be staggering. Early morning or evening flights of herons in the Florida everglades or Texas coast is a memorable spectacle. More

Neotropical Zigzag Heron (Zebrilus undulatus) and the African White-crested Bittern (Tigriornis leucolophus). To estimate their phylogenetic relationships to other herons, we compared these species with representatives of the major heron clades using DNA-DNA hybridization. Even though the Zigzag Heron resembles a tiger-heron in its barred plumage and forest habitat, it is most closely related to bitterns. The White-crested Bittern is monophyletic with the New World tiger-herons (Tigrisoma) and, thus, is better termed the White-crested Tiger-Heron. More
