Like the other 15 species of snipe, the great snipe is a beautifully camouflaged wading bird (4). The bulky great snipe has brown, patterned plumage, with extensive dark barring on the white underside (2). The feathers at the leading edge of the wing have bold, white tips, and the corners of the tail are also white (2). The long, pointed, two-toned bill, characteristic of snipes (4), has a slight droop towards the tip (2). Females are, on average, significantly larger than male great snipes, but their plumage is very similar. More
The great snipe breeds in two separate areas; a western population breeds in the Scandinavian mountains and an eastern population is distributed from Poland, throughout the Baltic States, Ukraine and Belarus, and west Russia to the Yenisey River in Siberia. It winters in sub-Saharan Africa, stopping at a few sites between its breeding and wintering areas (2) (6). More

Great Snipe Gallinago media at Sveipa Sweden Field Characters The Great Snipe Gallinago media is decidedly larger than the Snipe Gallinago gallinago. Kolthoff (1896) found that it ranged in weight from 140 grams in thin specimens to 213 grams in a very fat one, while Snipe averaged only 120 grams; Niethammer (1942) quoted even lower figures for the latter species, 13 specimens of which (mostly collected in April) ranged from 86 to 121 grams. While discussing the use of geolocators the Great Snipe was one obvious candidate species. Very little is known about the migration habits and wintering quarters of this endangered Swedish breeding bird. For example, no ring recoveries are known from Africa, the region where Scandinavian birds are supposed to spend the winter. Great Snipes return to their breeding areas, and thus geolocators can indeed be used to reveal their migratory movements and wintering areas. More

Great Snipe are bigger and podgier than Common Snipe, more like a Woodcock in shape. They look altogether more barred than a Snipe due to the extensively barred underparts and the rows of black and white lines across the rufous wing coverts. The white edges to the outer tail are more extensive. Habitat Breeds in boggy areas above the tree line of Scandinavian mountains and also in extensive lowland swamps of eastern Europe. More

The Great Snipe Hunt: Another hillarious episode! It's funy that Lumpus tries to prank the campers by searching the "snipe" that was in the wild. I really much loved it how the Jelly Trio were treating "Jeniffer". I really thought of the humor it had when Lumpus was falling from the tree and gets hit in the crutch while he fell! Overall: A+ for comedy. More
