The Hodgson's Frogmouth, though in range in the hills of the NE, had until now only few validated sightings from Bhutan. Now thanks to Shashank can be seen at Eaglenest. As per the field guide this should be a female, but Shashank, who has seen 12 individuals, says they were all the same colour. More

in a Hodgson's Frogmouth suddenly appearing at point-blank, eye-level range. She performed so well, sitting motionless in the spotlight that after 20 minutes we decided to just walk away from her! Our next flock the next morning was really exciting and slow moving, first was a Rufous-faced Warbler, then White-browed Scimitar Babblers followed by the difficult White-hooded Babbler - a great performance from a pair of this recently split species which is restricted to the eastern Himalaya. I returned to Eaglenest for the Hodgson's Frogmouth after it was heard/spotted by Shashank Dalvi immediately post my March trip. Needless to say, it was a spectacular discovery for the country. The bird has very few records for the country mainly from Namdapha. Since the monsoon was just breaking, I thought I will find time for a short 5-day trip for the Hodgson's Frogmouth and combine it with any opportunistic shooting. More
