Other far smaller locales, occur in Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, and Guyana. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. More

most significant of these was the Rufous Potoo and we duly set off in search of this rare, localised and shy nocturnal species. Although usually a hopeless task this species had infact been found at a day roost not too far away. However, as it has been so dry the water levels were too low for us to be able to use the usual track and our local guides, Domingo and Gilbert had to prepare a new trail for us through a couple of swampy areas. Except in the rufous potoo, facial bristles are less developed than in most other Caprimulgiformes. Unlike true nightjars, potoos lack comb-like serrations on the claw of the middle toe. Plumage coloration involves the drab hues and cryptic patterns found in other Caprimulgiformes, with gray, buff, rufous, or brown dominant in different species. Several of the smaller potoos have bold white spots or wing patches, but the two largest species are rather uniformly colored with closely barred and streaked patterning. More
