It is found in or near Atlantic forest in north-eastern Argentina, south-eastern Brazil, and eastern Paraguay. It is generally fairly common, and consequently considered to be of least concern by BirdLife International and IUCN. The supposed "Black-billed Hermit", described as P. nigrirostris, has turned out to be a mutant P. eurynome with an all-black bill. More

SCALE-THROATED HERMIT Phaethornis eurynome ATLANTIC FOREST Hermits are a large and distinctive group of hummingbirds with long tails and long, downcurved bills. The bill may look a little bit unwieldy, but for the hermit it is like a key to a door, fitting perfectly into long, trumpet-shaped flowers and allowing them access to a nectar store that other species cannot reach.FIGURE 1 - Adult ventral feeding, PROCOSARA, PN San Rafael (Alberto Esquivel November 2007 - ECOSARA Biodiversity Database).
