It is found in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest.

As it turned out, the Blue-tailed Hummingbird that was reported for the Monteverde CBC wasn't seen at those feeders, but rather was sighted by the bridge beyond Guacimal (on the road coming up from Sardinal) by Gary Diller and Toby Wallace. Gary also told me that he saw this species in 1989 at Palo Verde while birding with Mike Tidwell from Fresno, CA. More
