Although it perches in trees, the magpie goose nests on the ground. Mating is lifelong. Parent birds cooperate fully in building nests, incubating eggs, and rearing the young. The species is also unique among waterfowl in that the parents feed the young bill-to-bill rather than placing the food in the nest. Natural food includes aquatic plants and seeds, but in northern Australia the birds also raid rice crops. More

The magpie goose plays an integral part in the lives of Aboriginal people across northern Australia. The geese and their eggs are hunted for food.
