The Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) is a small stiff-tailed duck. Male on the left, female on the right Adult males have a rust-red body, a blue bill, and a white face with a black cap. Adult females have a grey-brown body with a greyish face with a darker bill, cap and a cheek stripe. The southern subspecies ferruginea is occasionally considered a distinct species. Description: The conformation of the small ruddy duck is distinctive: a short, thick neck; chunky body; stubby wings and a fan-shaped tail composed of stiff feathers. The male ruddy duck has a brilliant rusty-brown back, rump, neck, scapulars, chest, sides and flanks. The crown, rear ear coverts and hindneck are black, and the throat and sides of the head below the eyes are white. The bill is bright sky blue and the legs and feet are grayish. Although relatively silent, the male will give a "chuck-uck-uck-uck-ur-r-r" when displaying. More

Ruddy ducks are highly territorial in the spring although there territories are not well defined. Territories are typically an area around ten feet around their mates. You have to love the way they project an air of self importance or confidence as they swim the marshes of North America. Ruddy males are tireless in showing off this confidence.
