upland goose, one of the most conspicuous birds on the island group (3) (4). However, the Falklands population (Chloephaga picta leucoptera) represents only one of two subspecies of the upland goose, with the other subspecies (C. p. picta) ranging through southern mainland South America (2) (5). In common with other sheldgeese (Chloephaga sp.), the upland goose has a relatively upright stance and long, powerful legs, well adapted to walking, running and feeding on land (2). More
The Upland Goose is one of the most conspicuous birds in the Falklands, feeding in abundance on short grasslands throughout the islands. Whilst it prefers short grass for grazing, it favours denser growth for nesting, lining the hidden nest with vegetation and breast feathers. Between 5 and 8 eggs are laid during September or October, with chicks leaving the nest soon after hatching. More
The race of Upland Goose Chloephaga picta leucoptera found in the Falklands is unique. Scientists have observed that it is diverging in an evolutionary sense from its continental cousin, the Magellan goose. Falkland birds are sedentary and much tamer. Only occasionally, the smaller continental bird, in which the male also has barred underparts, is seen in the Islands. The Falkland race has never been recorded from the mainland of South America. The Falkland population may be as high as 150,000 pairs. More
