The Silver Teal's range includes southern Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands. The southernmost birds migrate to southern Brazil in the winter.

The Versicolor Teal is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

Charming little ducks with wide dark brown or black caps that contrast sharply with their distinctive pale-cream chicks, the rather long-powder blue bill is enhanced by yellowish-orange basal patches. Springing easily from the water, the low-flying ducks are noted for a swift, darting flight, and often circle areas from where they flushed before returning.
