The Pintail or Northern Pintail is a widely occurring duck which breeds in the northern areas of Europe, Asia and North America. It is strongly migratory and winters south of its breeding range to the equator. Unusually for a bird with such a large range, it has no geographical subspecies if the possibly conspecific Eaton's Pintail is considered to be a separate species.
The Common Pintail is classified as Least Concern. Does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.

The Northern or Common pintail ( Anas acuta ) is among the most beautifully marked ducks. A pintail male in breeding plumage has a brown head, white neck and breast, and a gray back and sides. The female is grayish brown. The speculum (a brightly colored section of secondary feathers along the wing) is metallic greenish-brown with a white rear border, but far more noticeable in flight is the male's long, slender, pointed tail.
