雲石蛙 Marbled Rubber Frog Phrynomantis annectens 分佈非洲安哥拉,納米比亞,南非. 索馬利蛙 Somali Rubber Frog Phrynomantis somalicus 分佈非洲索馬利亞與伊索匹亞. 在這五個種類當中,只有紅椒蛙和紅帶蛙的分佈區一樣遼闊,族群數量較多,因此在市場上也比較多見,其他的種類外表都沒有牠們出色,也就比較少出現.紅椒蛙的體色 算是一種警戒色,當 遇到威脅時,牠們會背對著敵人並把肛門抬高.頭部則朝著地面由前腿環抱著,這種姿勢加上牠肛門兩側的黑斑,猛然看起來儼然就是一條毒蛇的頭部,通常可以嚇阻掠食者. 紅椒蛙在野外通常棲息在枯木下或白蟻洞穴,由於牠們的腳趾末端也發展出類似樹蛙的圓形肉墊,很擅長爬樹,所以也會棲息在樹洞中或是沙漠棕櫚樹上,一般不會棲息於超過地面1.5公尺以上的高度.基本上牠們是適應力很強的種類,可以忍受較低的溼度.在乾旱季節牠們也可以鑽入土中與螞蟻同處溼度比較高的地洞之中,紅 椒蛙的皮膚能夠分泌一種化學成份來防止螞蟻叮咬.這種成份的毒性也是滿高的.牠們也常和帝王蠍共生.無論如何,紅椒蛙都算是典型的夜行性地棲蛙種.巧妙的是,紅椒蛙的外型 竟然與暈染箭毒蛙Dendrobates galactonotus幾乎是一模一樣,真是大自然的傑作. 在野外,紅椒蛙以螞蟻為主食,在沒有螞蟻的地區就以白蟻為主食.而人工飼養時就可以餵蟋蟀,麵包蟲等其他的節肢動物類活餌,牠們都可以接受,所以比較沒有挑食的問題. 雌雄蛙的體色相同,因此辨別比較困難,雌蛙通常體型比雄蛙大一點,而雄蛙在繁殖季會發出求偶的叫聲.當雨季來臨時,草原上到處都是水坑,這些臨時的水坑就變成紅椒蛙的產卵池.雌蛙每次可以產下至少500顆卵.在短短的一個月當中就可以由卵經過蝌蚪再演化成幼蛙,在池水乾枯之前就可以上岸了.
