Nepenthes klossii was discovered in southwestern New Guinea during the Wollaston Expedition of 1912 to 1913. The type specimen of the species, Kloss s.n., was collected by Cecil Boden Kloss near an expedition campsite (camp VIb) on January 26, 1913, at an elevation of between 930 and 1170 m above sea level.
