European black pine

Pinus nigra is a tree of the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub Biome. It is found in the higher elevations of the South Apennine mixed montane forests ecoregion in southern Italy and Tyrrhenian-Adriatic sclerophyllous and mixed forests ecoregion in Sicily. There are remnant populations in the Mediterranean conifer and mixed forests ecoregion, in the higher Atlas Mountains in Morocco and Algeria.

The European Black Pine Pinus nigra is a moderately variable species of pine, occurring across southern Europe from Spain to the Crimea, and also in Asia Minor, Cyprus, and locally in the Atlas Mountains of northwest Africa. The bulk of the range of the European Black Pine is in Turkey. It is found at elevations ranging from sea level to 2,000 m, most commonly from 250–1,600 m. Several of the varieties have distinct English names. More

* Pinus nigra is a bold-textured, long-needled, and dark green Pine tree that is ideal for Midwestern soils and climates, but is plagued by a combination of being overplanted and being very susceptible to the fungal infection known as Diplodia Tip Blight. More
