Pudu - smallest deer in the world
The pudu (Pudu puda) is the smallest deer in the world, ranging from 60 to 85 centimeters in length. They can be found in Chile and Argentina from sea level to 3200 meters high. They are very cautious animals, checking the wind every now and then by standing on their hind legs when feeding on twigs and bark, fruits, leaves and seeds. Its predators are eagle owls, the cougar, foxes and small cats. When the pudu feels threatened, it flees usually in a zig-zag pattern and have the unique ability, for deers, to be able to climb trees when threatened. It is listed as endangered by the IUCN and its main threats are habitat destruction, roe and fallow deer introduced from Europe, and domestic dogs.

Hi, Joseph, i think you misunderstood the purpose of this weblog. Our mission is to educate people (so eventually people will appreciate the wide range of animals our planet has to offer). It really is a bad idea to want to keep and ENDANGERED animal domestically…

I understand the point of people wanting to “preserve” such animals — but allowing people to keep such creatures as domestic pets would almost certainly increase the numbers of them, and thereby reduce the likelihood of the species remaining endangered.

I’m doing my geography assignment about the Pudu. Nobody in my class knows what the Pudu is, I think more should be done to get this really great animal out in the open. Who knows, the Pudu could disappear off the face of the Earth before we know it

I think that pudus should remain in the wild were they belong. I am also doing a project on pudus and find them fascinating!

Hey. I live in Northern California and at my relatives house in the mountains there are pudu’s everywhere. Somebody who lived up here a while ago must of had pudu’s for pets. There all over the place up here. The other day when i was driving up here there was one running right in the middle of the road!!! Thats the closest I’ve ever seen one. I’ve seen them before from a distance, but not like this one. There really shy. AND its really easy to decipher the difference between a pudu and a baby deer. Pudu’s back legs are almost like a Bunny Rabbits, the way their arched…..Anyways, yea//I was really tempted to jump out of my car and try to catch the little guy…there so cute!
