Ubatuba, the Black-hooded Antwren site at Perequ More

The endangered endemic Black-hooded Antwren has been found at a few sites near Angra dos Reis. I check 2 sites: Ariro and Pereque, finding it only at the latter where is was easy. Angra dos Reis is a large town and makes a good base to explore. Costa Verde buses leave the terminal in Rio every hour, cost 31R and take about 2 and a half hours. In Angra, I stayed at Hotel Jaques in the centre for just 20R. More

The Black-hooded Antwren, only recently rediscovered, survives in secondary habitats of the Serra do Mar region. Once again our site near Angra dos Reis proved reliable. directions for the Pereque Black-hooded Antwren site and found them both accurate and current. At least 4 Black-hooded Antwrens were seen fairly easily, with one male responding particularly well to tape. Also Flame-crested Tanager, Southern Bristle-Tyrant, Ochre-faced Tody-Flycatcher and Long-tailed Tyrant among others. Two other much-wanted species were also seen nearby, thanks to information from another guest (Martyn, surname unknown)while we were at Serra dos Tucanos lodge. More

rare Black-hooded Antwren on all our tours and the rather uninspiring secondary habitat has proved extremely rewarding with increased effort. Red-eyed Thornbird, Half-collared Sparrow, Spotted Bamboo-Wren and Rufous-capped Antthrush are just a few of the quality birds we’ve seen here whilst searching for the antwren. Arriving late afternoon in Brazil’s oldest national park, we may have time for some birding near the hotel in Itatiaia. More
