Although it isn't an endemic, the Giant Pitta will be on top of the target list for any birder visiting Sabah. The lowland forest at Danum Valley is probably the best place in the world to see it - you have at least a 10% chance of a sighting! It took us three solid days, ignoring all other species, in order to finally get a view. It was well, well worth it. Practically the size of a Night Heron, but otherwise a classic pitta. More

Giant Pitta is a rare resident and very seldom seen by visiting or resident birdwatchers alike. This species is confined to evergreen forests of the lowlands in the peninsula and has been seen a few times at Kaeng Krachan National Park although this site is by no means reliable for this species. Giant Pitta has also been seen here but sightings are EXTREMELY rare. The mid and upper storeys of the forest are also very productive in birding terms with many species from a wide range of bird families occurring. Great Slaty Woodpecker, Orange-breasted Trogon and Banded Broadbill are all regularly seen and more species are being added to the park list every year as more birders explore this wonderful habitat.
