The Augur Buzzard is an elegant buzzard of mountain ranges and hilly country in arid and savanna regions. In flight it shows its diagnostic rufous tail. There are two morphs, one with a white body and one with a black one. All the birds photographed here are of the white morph. More

The adult Augur Buzzard has white under parts and under wings. The female has black on the lower throat. Juveniles are brown above and buff below, the under parts later becoming white. There is a melanistic form of Augur Buzzard, all black, except for grey and black-barred flight feathers and a chestnut tail. About 10% of birds are melanistic, but the proportion rises in forested areas with high rainfall to as much as 50% in some areas. More

Slideshow images 6-8 show a young Augur buzzard that hunted mice from a perch in a dead tree about fifty feet from our house in IlBoru and also chased rodents on the ground. Images10-12 show a dark morph in the Lerai Forest in Ngorongoro Crater. The bird is common and seen often near habitation and agricultural fields as in images 6-8. In the adults note the short reddish, non-barred tail, the distinct dark trailing wing edge and the typical "comma" on the white wing. More
