Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops) is a common resident in India. Size: 30 cm Identification: Eurasian Hoopoe is a medium-sized bird. Plumage on the chest varies from pinkish-brown to chestnut. The broad, rounded wings, back, and tail are barred black and white. The spectacular erectile crest is the same color as the head and tipped with black. The bill is long, slender, and decurved; modified musculature allows it to be opened when the bird probes for food. Hoopoes have short legs. More

The Eurasian Hoopoe (right) is only slightly less rich in color than the Madagascar bird. It has one of the world's greatest scientific names - Upupa epops - that rolls eponymously across the tongue. OOO papa EE pops! There is also just something about a hoopoe. Perhaps it is because it is quite a rarity in England. More

the Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops - the birds in the pictures above), or a sub-species of Eurasian birds (Upupa epops africana). The birds known as African Hoopoes are darker/more rufous than Eurasian birds and have a different pattern on the wings - unless you know what to look for, though, they do essentially look the same. The Eurasian Hoopoe is one of those birds whose name and even the Genus is named after its call. Although some lump all of the Hoopoes into one species, Clements treats the Madagascar members of the family as a separate species. So, it will be treated that way here. The Eurasian Hoopoe nests in holes in trees and the nest is full of the bird’s feces to fend off predators. More
