Two sociable lapwings, satellite tagged in Kazakhstan last summer, have flown more than 5,000 miles to central Sudan where they are spending the winter before their return flight to breeding grounds in the central Asian republic. The species is one of the smallest birds ever to carry a tracking device and its journey has revealed far more about its migration than scientists expected. Only now are conservationists realising how important African countries are to sociable lapwings. More

The Sociable Lapwing or Sociable Plover (Vanellus gregarius) is a wader in the lapwing family of birds. It breeds on open grassland in Russia and Kazakhstan. Three to five eggs are laid in a ground nest. These birds migrate south through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey, to key wintering sites in Israel, Syria, Eritrea, Sudan and north-west India. Birds winter occasionally in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Oman. More

The sociable lapwing is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List 2007 (1) and is listed on Appendices I and II of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS or Bonn Convention) (3). The diet of the Sociable Lapwing consists of insects and other small prey mainly from grassland and arable. The nest is on the ground and the female lays three to five eggs. Bird Life International listed this species as critically endangered in 2004 due to a rapid decline in population for poorly understood reasons. The decline took place mostly between 1960 and 1987. The population was only 20 to 25% of the 1930s population. In 2006 the estimated population was between 600 and 1800 individuals. More

2007, a superflock of approximately 3,200 Sociable Lapwing were discovered in Turkey, according to Guven Eken, director of the Turkish Nature Association. The current IUCN classification is CR A3bc - meaning that the population is expected to decline in the next decade or so by 80%, but based on theoretical considerations and the known habitat destruction rather than direct observation of the birds. Thus, the new discoveries might mean that as more data becomes available, the species could be downlisted to Endangered. More
